February 28, 2014 – Pottsgrove High School in Pottstown, PA is getting a makeover. The school’s Kauffman Road building is being extensively repaired and may undergo additional renovation and expansion later this year. As part of the project, the Board of Directors is bringing in a team to test for and remove asbestos in the building.
Asbestos is an insulating fiber that was used extensively in construction until the 1970s. Because it is cheap and fire-resistant, it was very popular until it was discovered to be a carcinogen. When asbestos is disturbed or manipulated, asbestos particles can become airborne and inhaled or ingested, causing devastating respiratory diseases such as mesothelioma, asbestosis and lung cancer. Pottsgrove High School was constructed in 1955, so it is highly likely that there is asbestos lurking in the building that could be disturbed by the construction.
In order to prevent asbestos exposure, there are very strict guidelines for proper removal of asbestos. The Board of Directors has hired JMSI Environmental Corp., an environmental consulting company based in Swoyersville, to complete the job. JMSI has over 20 years of experience providing testing and environmental compliance services to clients, including numerous school districts throughout Southeastern Pennsylvania.
