December 22, 2014 – While scientists work to find better treatment strategies for mesothelioma, reporting of the actual number of cases is crucial to their research. A new study has recently found that in many countries such as Spain, the incidence of mesothelioma remains significantly underreported. According to a study conducted by Spain’s Ministry of Health and the Department of History of Science at the University of Granada, there is a “gross under-recognition” of malignant pleural mesothelioma in this European country.
Asbestos-related diseases such as mesothelioma have been included in Spain’s recognized list of occupational diseases since 1978. Between 1978 and 2011, there have been 164 asbestos-related occupational cancers reported in Spain. This represents an average incidence rate of 0.08 cases per 100,000 employees which is much lower than any other European country. Researchers concluded that the number of mesothelioma cases are significantly underestimated. The failure of workers to report occupational asbestos-related diseases such as mesothelioma also means that the mesothelioma patients have been significantly under-compensated for their injuries in this country.
Study author Dr. Montserrat Garcia-Gomez of Spain’s Ministry of Health hopes this research will lead to a more thorough investigation of the connection between occupational hazards and work-related mesothelioma and other lung cancers. Many factors contribute to the underreporting of mesothelioma cases. Individuals suffering with the symptoms of mesothelioma may be unaware that even indirect or very brief exposure to asbestos can cause this often fatal disease.
