Pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca announced on April 15, 2015 that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted orphan drug status to tremelimumab, a new drug with the potential to significantly improve treatment options for mesothelioma patients. Tremelimumbab is a monoclonal antibody which acts by binding to proteins present on the surface of activated T-lymphocytes (T-cells), which then stimulates the body’s immune system to attack and destroy mesothelioma cancer cells.
Even with prompt diagnosis and treatment, the five year survival rate for mesothelioma patients is less than five percent. There is a clear and urgent need for an improvement in mesothelioma treatment options. The FDA’s orphan drug program provides researchers with incentives to develop safe and effective treatments for rare diseases. Orphan drug designation will provide funding to aid in the development, clinical trials, and marketing of tremelimumab. Researchers are hopeful that this promising new mesothelioma drug will soon be available to patients suffering from asbestos-related cancer.
Tremelimumab is also being evaluated in combination with other drugs as a potential treatment option for patients suffering from non-small cell lung cancer, head and neck cancers, and solid tumors.
