September 26, 2016 marks the 13th annual Mesothelioma Awareness Day. This day of recognition was established in 2004 to raise awareness for the devastating disease. Increasing awareness is an important step in raising funds to conduct research and develop treatments, and at Shein Law, we applaud those efforts.
Many Americans have heard of mesothelioma, but the actual nature of the disease is relatively unknown. Mesothelioma is a rare and deadly form of cancer affecting the lining of the lungs and chest cavity. It is caused by exposure to asbestos particles which, if they become airborne, can be ingested or inhaled. Mesothelioma can lay dormant for 10 to 50 years before presenting symptoms, but once diagnosed, patients often have a very short life expectancy. There is currently no cure and treatment options are limited.
Mesothelioma Awareness Day Nationally Recognized
Since the first Mesothelioma Awareness Day in 2004, it has been recognized with an official proclamation from the United States Senate and House of Representatives, as well as numerous local governments. The awareness day has been featured on various media outlets and even has an annual segment on the Today Show to mark the occasion and call attention to the disease. Many communities are hosting benefits and races throughout the month of September to raise money to support mesothelioma research. People across the country are encouraged to become involved by wearing blue on September 26 and hosting or joining an event in their area.
About 3,000 Americans lose their lives each year from mesothelioma. Mesothelioma Awareness Day has already had an incredible impact, raising nearly one million dollars in funding for research. Until more viable treatment options become widely available, however, many more will suffer from this deadly disease.
