Philadelphia Mesothelioma Lawyers Discuss Asbestos Exposure in the Navy

Philadelphia Mesothelioma Attorneys at Shein Law Can Help You if You Have Been Diagnosed with Mesothelioma.Asbestos is a fiber that was used extensively in construction in the first half of the twentieth century. In the 1960s, scientists discovered that inhaling asbestos particles causes mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer affecting the lining of the lungs and chest cavity, as well as other deadly diseases. Although its use has declined, asbestos is still present in many older buildings and structures.

Unfortunately, there are some professions, such as construction, plumbing, HVAC and automotive maintenance, that are more susceptible to asbestos exposure. This group also includes members of the United States Navy, who serve aboard military vessels that were constructed using asbestos. Those who have served in the Navy are at a much higher risk of developing mesothelioma or other asbestos-related diseases, even if it has been decades since their service.

Types of Naval Vessels Constructed with Asbestos

The Navy used battleships extensively during World War I for carrier escorts and shore bombardment. Aircraft carriers were later introduced to serve as mobile airbases for military aircraft and largely replaced battleships by World War II. Sailors, naval aviators, and Marine detachments were all stationed on such carriers.

The Navy also utilized destroyers which protected larger ships from enemy fire, torpedo boats, submarines, and aerial attacks. After World War II, many destroyers were converted to guided missile destroyers.

All of these vessels were instrumental in the United States’ naval success during World Wars I and II, but put numerous servicemen at risk for developing asbestos-related diseases such as mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is very difficult to diagnose, as symptoms do not appear for 20 to 50 or more years after the asbestos exposure. There is currently no cure for mesothelioma and only limited treatment options are available for patients.
