New Jersey Mesothelioma Attorneys Report on Study Showing Asbestos Brake Dust – Mesothelioma Link

April 15, 2013 – A recent study published in the International Journal of Occupational and Environmental Health establishes a clear link between asbestos-containing brake dust and mesothelioma. The presence of asbestos in brake dust and the effect it can have has been a topic of heated debate for years.  Researchers say they have discovered a “net of evidence” that shows a causal relationship between brake dust and mesothelioma and are hoping to settle this debate with their findings.

Chrysotile asbestos was used frequently in the manufacturing of brake linings until the 1980s, when front-wheel drive vehicles became popular.  It is still used in some luxury brands, however, and brake linings containing asbestos may still be in circulation.  Removing brake pads that are damaged or starting to crumble can release millions of asbestos particles into the air, which can be inhaled.  Auto repair workers may grind, scrape, or blow compressed air onto the pads, which would also expose them to the asbestos.

The discussion has been divided on whether or not the presence of asbestos in the brake linings is enough to cause mesothelioma in auto workers.  Brake manufacturers contend that there is not enough evidence to support a link between the two.  However, the study, conducted in the fall of 2012, presents a strong cause and effect relationship between the chrysotile asbestos brake dust and cases of mesothelioma.  The authors of the study examined the occupational conditions of brake dust exposure and, applying “forensic epidemiology”, concluded that by taking a “semi-quantitative approach”  – looking at the quantity of exposure  – causation can be proven on a case-by-case basis.
