December 5, 2013 – In a recent study conducted by National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and reported in the journal Occupational and Environmental Medicine, firefighters were found to have higher rates of specific forms of cancers, as well as all cancers combined, when compared to the US population. Specifically, the 5-year study links firefighters to an increased frequency of mesothelioma.
The research examined the prevalence of cancers and cancer deaths from 1950 to 2009 for 30,000 firefighters from the Chicago, Philadelphia, and San Francisco fire departments. The study that found large numbers of cancers of the respiratory, digestive, and urinary systems contributing to firefighters’ overall higher rate of cancers. The research also determined that mesothelioma affects firefighters at a rate two times greater than the general U.S. population.
During the course of their duties, firefighters are regularly exposed to asbestos, the reason for the alarming rate of mesothelioma cases. Although previous studies have linked firefighters and mesothelioma, the large study population and extended time period of this latest study strengthens previous scientific evidence.
