The Shein Law Center in Philadelphia Raising Awareness and Sharing Hope: September 26th Mesothelioma Awareness Day

September 18, 2013 – Mesothelioma Awareness Day occurs each year on September 26th.  Established by an act of Congress, this special day is meant to draw public attention to one of the most lethal cancers worldwide.  In addition to raising awareness of mesothelioma, a deadly disease linked exclusively to asbestos exposure, advocates hope to use Mesothelioma Awareness Day to help obtain the financial funding necessary for the continued medical research in the field of mesothelioma with the hopes of finding better treatments and ultimately a cure.

At one time, mesothelioma was thought to affect only workers handling the deadly fiber directly. That is no longer the case as second-hand exposure has been found to be just as deadly to individuals not working in at-risk occupations. Each year, an estimated 3,000 people are diagnosed with mesothelioma.  However, the incidence of mesothelioma may be on the rise as a result of natural disasters such as hurricanes that cause mass destruction to asbestos-laden buildings, as well as national crises such as the falling of the Twin Towers on September 11th, 2001.

Philadelphia Mesothelioma Lawyers Applaud the Efforts of the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation

Since 2004, a group of volunteers from a nonprofit organization called the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation (MARF)  have gathered each September to increase the general public’s knowledge and understanding about the dangers associated with asbestos and the risk of developing mesothelioma as well as to seek financial support to eradicate the disease. Their determination and dedication to the cause was finally rewarded when in 2010 Congress officially proclaimed September 26th as National Mesothelioma Awareness Day.  Many states and cities have permanently declared this date as Mesothelioma Awareness DayPennsylvania and New Jersey are among those states that formally recognize this day.
