April 15, 2013 – Last month, the U.S. Senate unanimously passed a resolution designating the first week of April as National Asbestos Awareness Week. The goal of this annual resolution is to increase awareness of the risk of asbestos exposure and the chronic respiratory conditions it causes, such as mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is a cancer infecting the lining of the lungs and chest cavity, and about 3,000 cases are diagnosed in the United States each year.
Senator Max Baucus has sponsored the resolution seven years in a row. In his home state of Montana, mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases has already claimed the lives of nearly 300 residents of Lincoln County. Lincoln County is home to Libby, Montana, the site of a retired W.R. Grace asbestos mine and mill, which was closed in 1990 after it was linked to widespread asbestos contamination. Senator Baucus convinced the EPA to declare its first ever public health emergency, which provided residents with screenings and health care, as well as clean-up work in homes and other buildings.
Senators Baucus is committed to preventing similar tragedies from occurring in other towns. The annual National Asbestos Awareness Week aims to educate Americans not only on the prevalence of asbestos-related disease in the U.S., but also on what preventative measures they can take to preserve their health. Furthermore, increasing awareness of the dangers of asbestos exposure could lead to more early diagnoses.
