Philadelphia Mesothelioma Lawyers Discuss Persistent Risk After Asbestos Exposure

A recent study revealed that once a person has been exposed to asbestos, his or her risk of developing mesothelioma does not decrease over time. Researchers from several Italian universities conducted a study to observe the risk of developing mesothelioma in the decades after encountering asbestos. Exposure to asbestos fibers can cause a number of asbestos-related diseases; this particular study focused on peritoneal mesothelioma, an asbestos caused cancer which affects the lining of the organs in the abdomen.

The study examined data from a group of 1,977 former textile workers who had been subject to various levels of asbestos exposure. Of the 1,083 women and 894 men in the group, 1,019 had lost their lives, and the researchers found some alarming trends in the causes of their deaths. The textile workers were 29 percent more likely to be diagnosed with peritoneal mesothelioma than the overall population, and their risk of dying due to pleural mesothelioma was 33 percent higher than average. This group also showed a higher rate of fatality from lung and ovarian cancers. While the risk of lung cancer started to decline after 25 years, the risk of pleural or peritoneal mesothelioma remained high and stable.

Asbestos Remains in Body Long After Exposure

Part of the reason mesothelioma is such a dangerous disease is due to the biopersistence of asbestos. Asbestos particles are very sharp and rich in iron, and once they are inhaled or ingested, their size and shape make it very difficult for the body to completely remove them. The resulting irritation and inflammation can trigger mesothelioma. There are also genetic factors in combination with asbestos exposure that may increase an individual’s risk of contracting the disease.

Because the disease can lie dormant for so many years, it is often diagnosed at a later stage. Once diagnosed, mesothelioma can be very difficult to treat. The key to peritoneal mesothelioma survival is early detection. Those who have been exposed to asbestos should be checked regularly, even if their asbestos exposure was a long time ago. They should also be on the lookout for symptoms such as difficulty breathing, coughing, fatigue and stomach, back and chest pain.
