Philadelphia Mesothelioma Lawyers: National Cancer Prevention Month

February is National Cancer Prevention Month in the United States.  Although there are many factors beyond a person’s control – such as asbestos exposure – that may contribute to cancer development, there are steps people can take to reduce their risk.  The American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) estimates that about 374,000 cancer diagnoses in the United States could have been avoided, and has outlined some lifestyle tips that could reduce the number of preventable cancer cases. Read more about Cancer Prevention Month here.

Food and nutrition are a critical component of cancer prevention. There are many reasons to maintain a healthy diet, including reducing the risk of heart disease and diabetes and maintaining overall fitness.  Building a meal plan around healthy foods like vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and beans can also strengthen the body’s defenses against cancer.  Conversely, certain foods, such as red and processed meats, have been linked to colon cancer.  The AICR recommends limiting your intake of red meat and eliminating processed meats, including hot dogs, ham, bacon, and sausage, from your diet entirely.

Developing Healthy Habits Can Help Prevent Cancer

The AICR also recommends getting at least 30 minutes of physical activity every day.  For many, this means hitting the gym regularly, but any activity that raises your heart rate will do the trick – even something as simple as vacuuming can help get your heart pumping.  If it is difficult to work in 30 minutes at one time, try splitting up your activity into shorter sessions throughout the day that add up to 30 minutes.

One of the most popular New Year’s resolutions is to lose weight.  The AICR has found that maintaining a healthy weight is vital to reducing cancer risk and preventing other chronic diseases.  Excess fat stored in the body has been linked to six types of cancer.  Staying physically active and eating a healthy diet are both great ways to lose weight and lower the risk of cancer.

While these are all great suggestions for reducing the risk of cancer and maintaining a healthy lifestyle, it is important to acknowledge that not all forms of cancer can be prevented.  Mesothelioma, a rare and deadly cancer which affects the lining of the lungs, chest and abdominal cavities, is caused by exposure to asbestos.  The disease often lies dormant for decades before presenting symptoms, and there is currently no cure.  Only by having protected oneself from asbestos exposure in the past can a person reduce his or her risk of developing this deadly disease.
