Philadelphia Mesothelioma Lawyers Report: Study Reveals Eligible Mesothelioma Patients Not Receiving Chemotherapy

Asbestos Trust FundsDecember 29, 2014 –  A new Australian research study shows that many mesothelioma patients may not be getting all of the treatment options that are available.  Researchers from the Asbestos Disease Research Institute and Sydney Medical School analyzed data from a multinational group of patients to see if optimal treatment methods match what is being prescribed.  Their findings suggest that, in some countries, as many as 47% of mesothelioma patients who may benefit from chemotherapy are not receiving it as part of their treatment.

The researchers compared mesothelioma patient data, including tumor characteristics, with evidence-based mesothelioma treatment guidelines in order to find the best match. The data was run through a decision analysis software to determine the optimal treatment rates for various types of patients.  According to their findings, at least one round of chemotherapy could be beneficial for 65% of malignant pleural mesothelioma patients.

Chemotherapy Treatment Rates for Mesothelioma Patients Vary Worldwide

Based on treatment rates that have been reported, some countries are closer than others to this optimal rate.  Canada saw 61% of mesothelioma patients receive chemotherapy between 2003 and 2005, and in Australia, 54% of patients were treated with chemotherapy between 2007 and 2009.  In the Netherlands, however, only 36% of mesothelioma patients received chemotherapy between 2005 and 2006.  In some countries, the rate was as low as 18%.  The research team agrees that there are many factors that may have contributed to the differences in treatment strategies.

Mesothelioma is a rare and deadly form of cancer infecting the lining of the lungs and chest cavity.  It is caused by inhaling or ingesting asbestos fibers, but the disease may not present itself for 10 to 50 years after asbestos exposure.  A mesothelioma diagnosis is often accompanied by painful physical symptoms and a shortened life span.  Chemotherapy is commonly used as a first treatment for many patients, who may also undergo surgery or radiotherapy.  Newer treatments such as immunotherapy may have promising results, but are still being tested.
