Ben Shein, Philadelphia mesothelioma lawyer, of the Shein Law, continually supports cancer research. Most recently, Ben participated in the Swim Across America (SAA) swim on Nantucket Island. The focus of the event is to promote cancer awareness and raise funds for cancer research, prevention and treatment. Coast to coast, hundreds of volunteers and Olympians took part in Swim Across America events which ranged from open water swims to swims in pools.
Swim Across America offers swimmers and non-swimmers many options to support cancer research. Participation can include a 1/2 mile or one mile distance swim, a Kids’ Splash in Nantucket, swimming under the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, or in Boston Harbor with Olympians. Non-swimmers participate by donating to the cause or volunteering their time at one or more of the many events.
History, Participation and Results
The Swim Across America organization has grown from the original single event in Nantucket, Massachusetts to dozens of events across the U.S. that have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for cancer research, prevention and treatment. Over 5,000 swimmers, ages four to 78, participate on a yearly basis in the swimming events. SAA events unite all types of swimmers such as recreational and competitive swimmers, Masters and Olympic, and kayakers and boaters as well as volunteers. Both swimmers and volunteers are committed to chasing a cure for all types of cancer.
The monies raised by Swim Across America are given to cancer research and treatment centers such as the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in NYC, Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, and the Children’s Hospital of New York-Presbyterian, just to name a few. In the United States in 2015 alone, over one million cases of cancer will be diagnosed. This shocking number is proof that continued research, along with new approaches and innovative cancer treatments are in constant demand. Individuals who participate in Swim Across America events offer valued contributions to such a worthy cause.
