Philadelphia Mesothelioma Attorneys Report on Old Drug Giving New Hope to Mesothelioma Victims

October 8, 2012 – A recent study conducted by a team of Japanese scientists has found that cetuximab, a drug commonly used in the treatment of colorectal cancer, is also an effective treatment for resistant mesothelioma. For many, the prognosis for a patient diagnosed with asbestos-related mesothelioma becomes a battle against time and current treatments do not always increase survival rates. For patients who do not benefit from conventional mesothelioma treatments, cetuximab offers new hope for prolonged survival.

A group of Belgium scientists are also currently studying the effects of adding cetuximab to traditional chemotherapy treatments in mesothelioma patients who experience a recurrence of their cancer after surgery. Since the research is currently in progress, final results of the study have not been made available. Scientists have reported that the initial phase of the cetuximab study has shown positive results when used in laboratory mice.
