Philadelphia Mesothelioma Attorneys Report on Quebec’s Decision To Reopen the Jeffrey Mine

July 11, 2012 – Quebec has recently announced that it will support the revitalization of the Jeffrey Mine, located in Asbestos, Quebec, by investing $58 million dollars along with the private investor Balcorp Ltd. The mine, which will undergo a major renovation prior to its reopening, is expected to revive the asbestos industry in Canada. This controversial decision has been plagued by years of negotiations and opposing views. At the forefront of this opposition is the health and environmental dangers associated with asbestos.

Controversial Issues Surrounding the Jeffrey Mine and the Asbestos Industry

This recent announcement has sparked many different opinions and controversy amongst several different groups and organizations. Various groups have voiced their opposition in regards to the reopening of the mine. It is their opinion that the Canadian government is endangering the lives of many people.

The Canadian Cancer Society is urging the government to reconsider their decision of supporting this endeavor citing that 107,000 preventable deaths occur each year from diseases directly related to asbestos exposure. The asbestos that is being mined will be exported to developing countries such as India, Indonesia and the Philippines, and the question has been raised whether or not these countries have the resources to implement safe handling practices. The idea of putting people’s lives at risk in favor of financial gain is considered immoral by many of these organizations.

On the other hand, the president of the Jeffrey Asbestos Mine, Bernard Coulombe, has reported that if safe handling practices of the asbestos is adhered to there is little to no risk of exposure. Also, it has been stated that a type of asbestos known as chrysotile will be mined and that this is considered one of the safest forms of asbestos. In addition to creating between 400 and 500 full time jobs for the next several decades, it is anticipated that the town’s economy will be stimulated. Mine officials have repeatedly maintained that they have identified safe ways to handle the asbestos.
