Statistics on Asbestos Consumption Reported in the United States Geological Survey
The most recent data regarding asbestos consumption was published in the 2011 United States Geological Survey’s (USGS) Mineral Yearbook. The United States consumed 1,180 metric tons of asbestos in 2011 compared with 1,040 metric tons in 2010. This difference equates to a 13 percent increase in consumption and it was noted in the survey that most of this additional asbestos may have been put into stocks for later use. The asbestos consumption was associated mostly with roofing products and the Chlor Alkali industry. The imported asbestos came mostly from Canada followed by Brazil and South Africa.
The Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO) is an independent organization that was started by individuals who have been the victim of an asbestos exposure and their families as well as other concerned citizens. Their goals are to educate the public about the dangers and risks associated with an exposure to asbestos and aid in the prevention of asbestos-related cancers and diseases such as mesothelioma. ADAO has asked Congress to ban raw asbestos and any asbestos-containing materials from entering this country.
