March 23, 2015 – Once considered a folk remedy for various ailments, vinegar may be finding its place in modern medicine. According to a recent study, the acetic acid in vinegar may be helpful in combating mesothelioma. This is great news for mesothelioma patients who currently have limited treatment options. Mesothelioma, which is caused by asbestos exposure, often comes with painful physical symptoms and a short life expectancy.
The research team, led by Susumu Okabe, found acetic acid to have powerful cancer fighting properties. Okabe’s team harvested mesothelioma cells from human patients and observed them when put together with various concentrations of acetic acid. A relatively low concentration of 0.5% was enough to kill nearly all of the cancerous cells after only ten minutes of exposure. Although the exact reason behind acetic acid’s effectiveness remains unknown, this could result in promising new treatment options for individuals diagnosed with mesothelioma.
Acetic Acid Can Be Used to Bolster Chemotherapy Effectiveness
The study suggests that acetic acid can be used to treat mesothelioma, stomach cancer, and peritoneal mesothelioma, which infects the lining of the abdomen. The acid can be used either on its own or in conjunction with chemotherapy, and can be injected directly into the site of the tumor. In studies involving stomach cancer cells, the cancerous cells were found to be more sensitive to the acetic acid than healthy cells, suggesting that this treatment might help preserve healthy tissue. The potential of acetic acid as a companion to chemotherapy is especially encouraging for those suffering from mesothelioma, which tends to be more resistant to chemotherapy.
Researchers were quick to caution that people should not attempt to treat themselves with household vinegar. The study utilized concentrated acetic acid injected directly into cancerous cells, and there is no proof that ingesting vinegar will treat or prevent cancer. Moreover, consuming excessive amounts of vinegar can cause stomach ulcers and even death. More clinical trials are needed to determine how best to utilize acetic acid as a mesothelioma treatment option, but researchers now have an exciting new avenue to explore.
