July 25, 2013 – For most people, a diagnosis of mesothelioma brings little hope for more than a year of survival. For Paul Kraus, the world’s longest-living survivor of mesothelioma, the last 16 years have been one big miracle. Diagnosed with incurable disease at the age of 52, Kraus was given months to live. His strong will to survive combined with help from professionals in alternative medicine, has led him to develop a treatment plan that has enabled him to live longer than any other mesothelioma victim in the world.
A Victim of Second-Hand Asbestos Exposure
Any asbestos exposure can dangerous. Individuals who have experienced second-hand asbestos exposure are as vulnerable to develop mesothelioma and other asbestos-related illnesses as those who have direct contact with asbestos. Paul Kraus didn’t work directly with asbestos, but he was exposed to second-hand asbestos dust as a young man.
One summer he worked for a company not far from a factory that cut asbestos sheets. The dust from the plant traveled through the air to the facility where Kraus worked. In his book, he recalls seeing the asbestos dust on his clothes and even on his skin. His exposure to the toxic dust happened in the early 1970’s, before most of society was aware of just how dangerous second-hand asbestos exposure could be. His second-hand exposure in his twenties became full blown mesothelioma in his early fifties.
As a noted author and educator, Paul Kraus has written eight books, with the latest best seller being a chronicle of his survival from mesothelioma titled, “Surviving Mesothelioma and Other Cancers: A Patient’s Guide.” The book has become the bestselling book on mesothelioma in the United States and abroad. Kraus also uses his time to speak at conferences to inspire others battling asbestos-related diseases. His 16 year survival is nothing short of a miracle, and will hopefully offer hope to those newly diagnosed with the terminal illness.
