New Jersey Mesothelioma Lawyers: Promising Treatment for Veterans

A thoracic surgeon in Boston is providing new treatment options for veterans suffering from mesothelioma. Dr. Abraham Lebenthal recently performed the first intraoperative heated chemotherapy procedure at the Boston VA for a patient with malignant pleural mesothelioma. Mesothelioma, a rare and deadly form of cancer, has few treatment options, so it is promising to see the VA healthcare system taking advantage of novel treatments to help give patients a better outcome.

Intraoperative heated chemotherapy (IOHC) is performed immediately after surgery to remove the visible tumor cells. While the chest is open, a chemotherapy solution is circulated throughout the thoracic cavity for about an hour. The solution destroys any remaining cancerous cells that could not be removed by the surgeon. IOHC has shown promising results in abdominal cancers, including peritoneal mesothelioma, a type of mesothelioma affecting the abdominal cavity.

IOHC Helps Increase Long-Term Survival

IOHC has become more popular among mesothelioma experts in the last few years. Lebenthal saw firsthand the lifesaving effects of the treatment at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, under the instruction of mesothelioma expert Dr. David Sugarbaker. Sugarbaker has been using the procedure at Brigham and Women’s for a decade, extending the life of his patients up to seven years. The procedure requires a skilled surgical team, and it was thanks to the partnership with Brigham and Women’s that the VA procedure was successful.

Approximately one third of Americans diagnosed with mesothelioma each year are veterans. Asbestos was used extensively by the military in the 20th century, and with the disease’s lengthy latency period, large numbers of older veterans are just now seeing the effects of asbestos exposure from 20 to 50 years ago. Lebenthal is hopeful that IOHC will be helpful to many more patients; veterans currently receiving healthcare from the VA can get a referral to be treated by him and his team in Boston.
