New Jersey Mesothelioma Lawyers: No-Placebo Clinical Trials

Clinical trials involving terminally ill cancer patients are risky, but they are worth the risk if the drug being tested can offer the patient a longer life expectancy.  When the clinical trial includes a placebo pill to compare the effectiveness of the drug being tested, those terminally ill cancer patients face the possibility of receiving no medication during the time of the trial. This means that some of those entering a clinical trial may be opting to end medical intervention for their already advanced cancer.

Fortunately for these patients, the Blue Ridge Cancer Care clinical research center in Virginia is now offering clinical trials that do not include placebo drugs, which is great news for all cancer patients, particularly mesothelioma patients.  Because of the long dormancy period between exposure to asbestos fibers and the onset of mesothelioma, patients are normally in the advanced stages of the disease when diagnosed.  A cure for mesothelioma has not yet been found, so a clinical trial offers hope to extend the life expectancy of these patients.  The no placebo trials offer this hope to all of its trial participants.

Blue Ridge Cancer Care Facility Offers Placebo-free Clinical Trials

The Blue Ridge Cancer Care (BRCC) facility offers placebo-free clinical trials to patients with stage ll, lll, and lV breast, prostate, colon, and lung cancers; as well as patients with mesothelioma.  It is a big decision for these patients to make to participate in a clinical trial because the drug being tested is not yet approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA.)  To qualify for a clinical trial, the FDA must first go through a very stringent review period and investigation of what is known about the new drug.  Protocols are established on who may participate in the trial, and requires that these volunteers be informed of all known risks and side effects.  In the past, trial participants also had to be informed that there was a chance that they could receive a placebo, which would offer no medical benefits.  Now, all patients involved in clinical trials at BRCC can make their decisions based on the knowledge that all participants will receive the experimental drug.
