New Jersey Mesothelioma Lawyers – Asbestos Use Drops, Mesothelioma Rates Remain Steady

asbestos removalMay 30, 2013 – Despite aggressive efforts to reduce the use of asbestos in construction, the incidence of mesothelioma has remained steady for decades.  A recent report by the Surveillance Epidemiology and End Reports (SEER) Program of the National Cancer Institute reveals that there are just over 3,000 cases of mesothelioma reported annually, as there have been for the past 30 years. Severe restrictions have been placed on asbestos, and its annual use has dropped from 803,000 metric tons to 1,180 metric tons in 2011.  Unfortunately, this dramatic decrease has not been reflected in the incidence of mesothelioma.

Old Asbestos Causes New Mesothelioma Cases

One of the reasons for the steady rate of mesothelioma cases is the length of time it takes the disease to appear.  Symptoms may not present themselves for 10 to 50 years after initial asbestos exposure.  In recent years, the incidence of mesothelioma was highest among males ages 75-84, who may have been exposed when asbestos use was at its peak.  Although the demographic of who is contracting the disease may be changing, the numbers remain consistent.

Another reason for the continued prevalence of mesothelioma is the continued exposure to  “old” asbestos.  Because it was cheap and extremely versatile, asbestos was used in the vast majority of buildings in the early- to mid-20th century.  Anyone commencing a renovation or demolition project runs the risk of encountering asbestos that has been lingering in these buildings for years.  Asbestos only gets more dangerous with age as it breaks down, and when disturbed, it can send thousands of cancer-causing fibers into the air.
