January 19, 2015 – In a recent study published in Clinical Cancer Research, a group of researchers from Ohio’s Case Western Reserve University and the German Georg Spayer Haus found that Curcumin, a commonly used spice in Asia, helps to slow down the progression of mesothelioma when combined with amino acids. The study brings new hope to patients fighting the battle against malignant mesothelioma.
In recent trials, the research team found that a certain accelerator protein was active in mesothelioma cells. The study also reveals that Curcumin acts as a decelerator, slowing the growth of the mesothelioma cells, and in some cases, stopping them from growing altogether. This new information is crucial in understanding what makes mesothelioma cells develop, and in essence, what will help to retard that growth, or stop it in its tracks.
The downside to Curcumin is that it is not effectively absorbed by the body when ingested. New types of delivery methods will need to be analyzed so that the spice can be combined with amino acids and given to patients in a form suitable for absorption.
The protein STAT3 that accelerates the growth of malignant mesothelioma cells is also found in other cancers. Further research into the effectiveness of Curcumin and amino acids in the fight against mesothelioma can lead to significant treatments in other types of cancer. Clinical trials are being conducted to find the most effective delivery system of Curcumin, and to gain understanding in how its ability to increase levels of PIAS3 can be used to slow down or stop the progression of other malignant cancers.
