August 20, 2013 – The Pennsylvania and New Jersey mesothelioma attorneys at the Shein Law are pleased to report that the research findings presented at a recent international seminar are showing great promise for patients suffering from malignant pleural mesothelioma, an aggressive and rare cancer that affects the lining of the lungs and is caused exclusively by an exposure to asbestos. Furthermore, our legal team at the Shein Law was pleased to hear that Dr. Joseph S. Friedberg, a local world-renowned mesothelioma expert and co-director of Penn Medicine’s Mesothelioma and Pleural Disease Program was in attendance at the conference to present his advancements in treating the disease, as we have been long supporters of his research. Numerous medical professionals from around the world including doctors and nurses as well as individuals who have already been diagnosed with mesothelioma attended the seminar.
International Symposium: Research Findings on Lung-Sparing Therapies Presented by Numerous Mesothelioma Specialists
The Pacific Heart, Lung and Blood Institute and the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) hosted the 3rd Annual International Symposium on Lung-Sparing Therapies for Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma. A group of international mesothelioma specialists gathered together in Santa Monica, California to discuss and present their most recent research findings on treatment options for pleural mesothelioma, specifically lung-sparing therapies. During the previous symposiums, it was determined that mesothelioma patients should not necessarily undergo treatments that involve removing the affected lung. Instead, efforts should be geared towards treatment options that preserve the function of both lungs.
Dr. Robert B. Cameron, director of the UCLA Mesothelioma Comprehensive Research Program, led the symposium. In addition, Dr. Cameron discussed his findings on the effects of cryoablation and thermal research as treatments for pleural mesothelioma. A key presenter at the symposium, Dr. Joseph S. Friedberg of the University of Pennsylvania reviewed the results of his research on the innovative treatment option of utilizing photodynamic therapy (PDT) as a treatment approach for mesothelioma patients. This promising new therapy uses a drug and a light to identify and attack the cancerous mesothelioma cells. When combining this therapy with lung-sparing surgery, patients have achieved improved survival rates. Read our previous blog on this ground-breaking treatment. Other specialists in attendance presented findings on the advancement of tomotherapy methods used after a pleurectomy, the use of anti-mesothelin agents as a treatment for mesothelioma, and the most recent surgical procedures being implemented.
