Philadelphia Asbestos Lawyers Report on a New Study on the Lasting Effect of Asbestos Exposure

June 17, 2014 – A new international study confirms that the risk of developing an asbestos-related disease never diminishes for individuals exposed to asbestos because the toxicity of the asbestos fibers does not diminish over time.  According to a multinational study out of Curtin University’s School of Public Health in Western Australia, no matter how long the fibers have been in an individual’s body, they may cause the development of an asbestos-related disease.

Six scientists collected data on the duration of asbestos toxicity in the body in this study of eight diverse patient groups from Italy and Australia entitled “Mesothelioma Risk After 40 Years Since First Exposure to Asbestos: A Pooled Analysis.” An examination of over 862 mesothelioma cases revealed that the risk of developing an asbestos-related disease after exposure to asbestos fibers will not disappear during one’s lifetime.  Between 40-50% of mesothelioma cases are first diagnosed over 40 years after the initial exposure to asbestos.  Read the study here.
