Philadelphia Mesothelioma Lawyers: 11th Annual Mesothelioma Awareness Day

Posted on

This Saturday, September 26, 2015, is the 11th annual Mesothelioma Awareness Day. Founded by the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation in 2004, September 26th has been officially declared Mesothelioma Awareness Day by the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives. The goal of the day is to raise awareness for this relatively rare but deadly form of cancer. Approximately 3,000 Americans die of the disease every year. Every September, victims and their families are invited to show their solidarity by wearing blue and attending sponsored events.

Volunteers from the Meso Foundation will be meeting in person on the morning of September 26th to represent the organization on the Today Show. The organization will also be co-sponsoring an all-day conference, along with Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. The 2015 New York Regional Conference on Malignant Mesothelioma is open to mesothelioma patients and their families, as well as medical professionals and others involved in the fight against mesothelioma. Expert panelists will present the latest updates in treatment methods and ongoing research.

Anyone Can Join the Conversation

Those outside of the New York area can participate  from home as well. People affected by this devastating disease are encouraged to wear blue to show their support. Participants can get involved on social media as well by putting a blue filter over their profile picture and using the hashtag #curemeso. On Tuesdays in September, a Twitter discussion using the hashtag #ENDMeso will be hosted by Linda Reinstein, founder of the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO), from 12:00pm to 1:00pm, Eastern Time.

The ADAO has been doing their part by working tirelessly to put an asbestos ban in place in the United States. Asbestos, a carcinogenic fiber used in insulation, is the cause of mesothelioma and other respiratory conditions. Although asbestos is known to be toxic, the asbestos industry has successfully opposed a nationwide ban. The ADAO is inviting everyone who has been affected by mesothelioma or another asbestos-related disease to lend their voices to those calling for an end to asbestos exposure, which Reinstein describes as a “man made tragedy.”

Raising awareness through events such as Mesothelioma Awareness Day has generated significant funding toward mesothelioma research and brought national attention to this deadly disease. There is still no cure for mesothelioma, and treatment options are limited. If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with mesothelioma or other asbestos-related disease, an experienced asbestos lawyer can help you get the compensation you deserve.
