Pleural mesothelioma is the most common form of mesothelioma and is a cancer of the lining of the lungs. When asbestos is inhaled, the tiny fibers travel to the pleura, the mesothelium that lines the inner rib cage and the outside of the lungs, and cause the cells to become cancerous. The asbestos fibers cause cancerous cells to divide abnormally, thereby thickening the pleural membrane layers and building up fluid. This fluid places pressure on the lungs and the respiratory system and can prevent normal breathing.
