Mesothelioma & Asbestos

Pericardial Mesothelioma

The Rarest Form of Mesothelioma

Pericardial mesothelioma attacks the mesothelial lining surrounding the heart. Asbestos fibers travel to the mesothelial tissue that surrounds the heart, where they lodge and create cancerous tumors. As the tumors expand, they can restrict the heart’s proper functioning and cause cardiac problems, including cardiac failure.

Pericardial mesothelioma is the rarest form of mesothelioma and accounts for only five percent of mesothelioma cases. Other forms of mesothelioma, including peritoneal and pleural mesothelioma, can spread to affect the tissue surrounding the heart and cause pericardial mesothelioma.

Symptoms of Pericardial Mesothelioma

Symptoms of this rare form of mesothelioma include:

  • •Irregular heartbeat
  • •Chest pain
  • •Heart palpitations
  • •Shortness of breath
  • •Loss of appetite
  • •Hypertension
  • •Fatigue
  • •Night sweats
  • •Some swelling of the face
    and upper extremities
